Why Care?

We've established what the Patchwork Initiative does, but why should we care about fashion pollution?

It's a way bigger issue than you may think. The resources on this page are here to help explain why we should care about this issue, and what you can do at an individual level to help combat fashion pollution.

2nd Largest Pollutant

The fashion industry is the second-largest source of pollution in the world, being passed only by the oil and gas industry. Learn how cheaply-made garments harm the environment here, and see simple ways to fight these habits here.

Unethical Labor Practices

With over 75 million factory workers worldwide, less than an estimated 2% of these employees earn a living wage. Work conditions often include exposure to cancer-causing chemicals, increasing amounts of child labor, and 16-hour work days. (Source)

Wastes Finite Resources

The fashion industry is responsible for 20% of the world's water waste, as well as creating 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions. And the industry is on track to keep harming the environment at higher rates, seeing as only 12% of garment materials end up being recycled. (Source)
